Auditions for the Fall Play- Leading Ladies
by Ken Ludwig
A farce directed by Robert Rotenberry
Auditions for this Fall Main Stage Play are on September 6th and 7th starting at 6pm in classroom T-1
You can sign up for a time slot in T-2. Prepare a 1 minute memorized monologue.
Callbacks are September 8th at 6 pm and 9th at 1:00. The actors called back for Leo and Jack will have to appear as Maxine and Stephanie at the 2nd callback and actresses for Audrey will need to rollerskate.
This play is open to all APA students. Actors can only be in one of the fall productions- Leading Ladies, Drowsy Chaperone or Night of the Living Dead. You should audition for all three if you are interested. Auditions for Night of the Living Dead and Leading Ladies are held at the same time. Mr. Rotenberry will be casting both shows.
It’s the fifties and the Leading Ladies are nothing like you can imagine. Two down on their luck British actors, Leo and Jack, are playing Scenes from Shakespeare at unlikely places like Moose Lodges in Pennsylvania. They read in the newspaper that an elderly woman is searching for her two long lost heirs in England so she can leave them millions. They decide to pretend to be the heirs only to find out that they are women! In a page out of Some Like It Hot Stephanie and Maxine arrive to meet their “auntie”. Complications build as Leo falls for Meg who is engaged to Duncan and Jack falls for the roller skating Tastee Bite waitress Audrey who is beloved by the dimwitted Butch. Both Butch and his father decide to go after Stephanie (Jack) for the money. Soon all are moving on a collision course of hilarity. Add some Shakespeare performance including a final mini Twelfth Night and you have a wild ride. There is a reason why Ken Ludwig is APA’s most produced author (Lend Me A Tenor, Crazy for You, Moon Over Buffalo), his plays are laugh filled riots that leave the audience thoroughly entertained.
CAST: (5 Males / 3 Females + ensemble)
LEO -M 20′s-30′s – A frustrated Shakespearean actor with a dream of bringing Shakespeare to Hollywood. Currently he is performing in a traveling show on the Moose Lodge circuit. He was born and raised in England. A challenging role that requires changing from male to female and back again frequently and quickly. Attracted to Meg. He is also Maxine who is chic and flamboyant. Orsino in Twelfth Night
JACK-M 20′s-30′s – Leo’s Travelling, Shakespearean acting, “what are you getting us into this time”, companion. He was also born and raised in England. Another challenging role that requires changing from male to female and back again frequently and quickly. Falls for Audrey. Also is Stephanie, shy and demure, deaf and dumb who is kissed by both Doc and Butch. Is Olivia in Twelfth Night
MEG -F 20′s – She is a local Pennsylvania girl. She’s vivacious with enormous energy and a great sense of humor. She also has the fresh unstudied beauty that most women would kill for. She harbors a world of dreams, and sleeps on them every night. They keep her alive, but she doesn’t know it. She is engaged to Duncan but falls for Leo and maybe Maxine. Viola in Twelfth Night.
AUDREY -F 20′s – She’s extremely sweet and good natured. She’s a knockout who is adept on roller skates. She is also not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Likes Butch and later Jack. Is Sebastian in Twelfth Night
DUNCAN -M 40′′s – He’s the local minister and is substantially older than Meg (to whom he is engaged). He is very conservative and rather fussy, set in his ways, scatterbrained, and lives in his own world. He is the antagonist. Malvolio in Twelfth Night
FLORENCE -F 60′s-70′s – She makes crusty seem docile. She is very grumpy and old. In fact, she’s on-death’s-door old. She’s loud and her eyesight is horrible. Maria in Twelfth Night.
DOC -M 40′s-50′s – A crusty likeable curmudgeon. He’s a country doctor who doesn’t take guff from anybody. He is Butch’s father. Wants Butch to marry Stephanie for the money but goes after her himself. Sir Toby in Twelfth Night.
BUTCH -M 20′s – He is a little slow on the uptake, but earnest and sincere with a good heart. He played football in high school. He also has a huge crush on Audrey. Is forced by his father to make a play for Stephanie. Sir Andrew in Twelfth Night.
ENSEMBLE- 5 Males/3 Females- each understudies the cast plus play Frank and the Moose lodge audience, the conductor and train commuters, Trixie McCall, Bubbles Schaeffer, policemen and guests.
